Well it is 2:00 am, John Rippinger, Katie Mangan, and myself (Blair Farwell) are sitting at the PADS Shelter (Public Action To Deliver Shelter) a homeless shelter located in Lombard, IL. All three of us have pulled a six hour shift from 9:00pm to 3:00am, and John and I both will be in the office tomorrow (Katie is taking a well earned PTO day).
We are proud of our ability to be able to return to the community, and being able to keep the doors open to this facility with just Resource Brokerage Employees volunteering during this graveyard shift. As a result of us being here, 40 men, women and children have a warm, safe place to sleep this evening. If we do get standardized healthcare, John and Katie have a second career opportunity, while I continued to man the “security desk” (and do office E-mail) they packed 45 lunches for tomorrow for the guests. So not only did the guests receive a hot meal last night (provided by the prior shift of volunteers) a warm, safe place to sleep all night, and receive hot breakfast in the morning (provided by the shift after ours) but they will also have a nutritious lunch packed for them as well (by our shift).
Returning to the community is of high importance to Resource Brokerage, but in this case, I can honestly say, I for one am receiving 3 times as much as I am giving this evening, in the small difference that I am able to make in some people’s life that desperately need the help. It definitely puts it all in perspective!
Make it a great day!
I am so proud to associated with Resource. But I am even more proud to know what wonderful caring human beings I am associated with, keep up the good work. I am sure God is smiling.
